An independent product company

Odd ideas.
Serious software.

Live, or about to be.

Good ideas.
Now with a URL.

Built around everyday friction.
Made to get out of your way.

Your next website is already a doc.

Turn a Google Doc into a website. Publish a portfolio, a blog or a knowledge base from an editor you already know, and keep writing where you already write.

Good products start with a real need.

I read every one before it goes on the wall.

Still on the workbench.

Good things take a few iterations.

Scribbit

A quieter home for your notes.

Take a closer look

A desktop-first notes app built around quick capture, offline access and privacy by default. The assistant is a rabbit. Think Clippy, but genuinely useful.

FeatureBlocksReusable features for software builders. On pause

Whole product workflows, from billing to authentication, that install into the stack you already use. Taking a breather while I work out its next chapter.

Nothing retired yet. When something is, it gets a row here and an honest note about why.

02 / The method in the oddness

Curiosity is the starting point.

Play with the idea.
Care about the details.

“Oddly” leaves room to explore.
“Serious” means the work gets done properly.

01

Start with a real itch.

Something that should be easier. A small frustration, a missing tool, a “why does this take so long?”. Ideas that start there tend to be worth finishing.

02

Build it properly.

No deliberately half-built MVPs. If it’s worth launching, it should feel finished: designed, tested, and ready to be judged fairly.

03

Put it into the world.

A launch starts the conversation. Real use shows what matters, what’s missing, and what deserves another iteration.

04

Keep what earns its place.

Some products grow. Some change direction. Some go back on the shelf, with a note about why. The point is to keep making useful things, and keep learning.

One person. Short distance between idea and action.

03 / Lately

Notes from the workbench: starts, launches, fixes, and the occasional regret.

  1. Oddly Serious

    Started this website. It’s a one-pager with a backend. You’ll see why.

  2. Scribbit

Sign in with Apple and Google works. Out to the browser, back through scribbit://.

  3. Scribbit

Started Scribbit. It has a rabbit.

  4. Demand Watch

Nobody gets in until they confirm their email. Fewer bots. Fewer ghosts.

  5. GrowX

Started GrowX. X sign-in, a daily account sync and a growth dashboard.

  6. DocaLive

Failed queries no longer carry their values into the production log. Unglamorous. Important.

First commit on DocaLive. Google Docs in, websites out.

Oddly sitting on a black block, quietly working on a coral laptop.
Head of getting things done.
Also the only one with a hardhat.

04 / The company behind the hat

Small by design.
Curious by default.

Oddly Serious Inc. is an independent product company, built by Akshay Desai in Canada. That’s me.

I started as a developer, moved into product design, and never really stopped doing either: ten-plus years of building SaaS, from the first sketch to production. By day I lead product design at a SaaS company. Oddly Serious is what I build the rest of the time.

It’s a home for the tools, experiments, and occasionally odd ideas that deserve a chance to become something useful. One person building. One mascot keeping an eye on things.

Domains The ones I’ll admit to (4)
  • oddlyserious.companyThe one that holds all the others.
  • docalive.comDocs, alive. It says what it does.
  • demand.watchA .watch domain for a product that watches. Obviously.
  • hireus.lolSerious talent. Unserious URL.

05 / Say hello

Read by a person.

Say hello.

Using something I built? Have an odd idea, or want to back or buy one of these? Tell me. I read everything.

One thing: I don’t take client work. This isn’t that kind of company.

What’s this about?
Spam goes nowhere. Real messages go to me.

There’s always another good idea.

Still curious.
Still building.

A game, obviously
